I’ve previously been very impressed with your work and has signed a few of your petitions in the past. So far I’ve always felt that your work has been for the best of human kind when it comes to freedom, free speech and so on. Then I came across this:
Can you take one minute to let us know if you support Avaaz featuring the following member-generated petition?
Petition: Grant Peter Sunde’s (of The Pirate Bay) plea for pardon
A few days ago, Peter “Brokep” Sunde – the former media spokesperson of The Pirate Bay – sent a formal plea for pardon to the Swedish Administration. This is a procedure where you can get a judicial sentencing undone by the political administration in exceptional circumstances. On April 17, 2009, a verdict was handed down that led the world to blank stares of disbelief, then furious anger. The two operators of The Pirate Bay, its media spokesperson, and a fourth unrelated person were sentenced to one year in jail each and damages that, by now, well exceed 10 million euros. This was essentially a declaration of war against an entire generation. The case was appealed and lost, and the Supreme Court denied to hear the case, to everybody’s surprise except the establishment’s. This Petition is to make the Swedish government grant Peter’s Plea for pardon.
What do you think of this petition?
– I support Avaaz providing people the opportunity to sign this petition
– I think Avaaz should remove this petition
– I’m not sure
Your input will be kept confidential, and will help ensure that this new initiative reflects the views of the whole Avaaz community.
Ok, I only have one question:
WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!?
It’s ok, it happens to us all that we have bad days and so on, but this must be a combination of a serious brain fart, the mother of all hangovers and something you shouldn’t have eaten, because, seriously:
Avaaz has just launched a new tool to allow any Avaaz member to instantly start their own petitions. But we’re a democratic community of more than 14 million people, and will only support petitions that our community agrees are not offensive, inflammatory or otherwise objectionable.
”Not offensive”? ”Inflammatory”? ”Otherwise objectonable”? I thought the whole POINT with Avaaz was to take up questions and protest against things that some people would prefer to see buried six feet under, and now you’re starting to sound like a mini-Murdoch that worries about your reputation being stained by the muck you help throw around? How will anyone be able to take you guys serious again if you don’t cancel this idiocy immediately and apologize?
I won’t, that’s for sure. And it’s not because it’s a petition about Peter Sunde, it’s because it’s your own reputation that’s in jeopardy. What’s the next petition you will ”democratically” remove because it’s considered ”offensive, inflammatory or otherwise objectionable”?
If you wanna be trustworthy you can’t just talk the talk, you’ve gotta walk the walk too. Right now you guys are stumbling and that worries me. A lot.
